Help with the app

Activity Record is an hourly activity and feeling journal for iPhone, iPad, and Android. Each hour, you note what you were doing and rate how strong a feeling you choose to follow was, from 0 to 100. Over time, Insights shows you which activities, times of day, and days of the week tend to go with that feeling, purely as descriptions of your own record.

These answers are about the app you install from the App Store or Google Play. It works the same way on both; where a platform differs, it says so.

If you are using the activity record worksheet in your browser at activityrecordapp.com/try, see website support instead. The two are separate: they do not share data, and they work differently.

Frequently asked

Where is my data stored?

On your device. Sync is optional and off until you turn it on in Settings: on iPhone and iPad it uses your own private iCloud, and on Android it uses a hidden folder in your own Google Drive that only this app can see. Either way the record stays yours, and no one else can see it. See the app privacy policy.

How do I export my record?

Settings, then Your data. You can export a designed PDF, a CSV spreadsheet, or a full backup file that can be restored later.

Can I change the feeling I follow?

Yes. Go to Home, or Settings, then Change. Ratings you already saved keep the feeling they were rated under, so you can switch anytime without losing history.

What are pleasure and mastery?

Two more things you can rate an hour on, alongside the feeling you follow. Pleasure is how much fun, joy, or satisfaction you got from the hour. Mastery is your sense of achievement: feeling capable, having made progress, or being in control. They often disagree — a hard afternoon of work can be low on pleasure and high on mastery, and an easy evening the reverse — and that disagreement is usually the interesting part.

How do I turn pleasure or mastery on?

Settings, then the first section, “What you rate each hour”. Each of the three has its own switch. Keep at least one on. Once a switch is on, the hour editor shows a rating card for it, and Insights gains its own intensity map and its own set of observations for it.

If I turn one off, do I lose those ratings?

No. Turning one off only changes what you are asked for from now on. Everything already saved stays exactly as it was, and turning the switch back on shows it again. The same is true in reverse: turning one on does not go back and add it to hours you logged before.

Do I have to rate all three every hour?

No. Rate whichever ones you have an answer for and leave the rest. An hour saves as long as it has an activity and at least one rating. If keeping up with three feels like a chore, it is doing the opposite of what it is for — turn one off.

Does the app start me on a feeling by default?

No. When you first open the app it asks you to choose or write the feeling you want to follow, and it will not move past that step until you do. There is no preset feeling, because which one is worth following is yours to decide.

Does the app share data with the website worksheet?

No. They are completely separate. The worksheet at activityrecordapp.com/try lives only in the browser you are using, and the app lives on your device. Nothing moves between them automatically. You can move a record by hand: download the backup file from the worksheet, then use Restore in the app.

How do reminders work?

Settings, then Reminders. Up to 12 daily reminders, scheduled locally on your device. Tapping one can open the current hour's editor directly, if you like.

Is there a widget?

Yes. On iPhone and iPad there is a home screen and lock screen widget; on Android there is a home screen widget and a long-press app shortcut. All of them open the current hour's editor with one tap.

Can I move my record between an iPhone and an Android phone?

Yes, by hand. The two do not sync with each other automatically — iCloud and Google Drive are separate places, and neither can see the other. But the backup file is the same format on both: in Settings, then Your data, save a backup on the old phone, move the file across however you like, and use Restore on the new one.

What languages are supported?

English and Spanish, switchable in Settings, including the widget.
